Photo: View of the Aran Islands from Ayr, Scotland. Whenever I look at this picture (taken in 2008 when I backpacked through Ireland and Scotland with a few girl friends) I am reminded of the adventures that lie ahead!
I love to learn and try new things, both in my personal life and my profession!
MENTORSHIP
This year (2014-2015) I was asked to mentor a student teacher for his 6-week IPT Practicum. He will be in our classroom during March 2015.
To stay current on educational issues and best teaching practice I use a few technological aids.
ZITE
This is an iPhone app that I downloaded on my phone. It is like a personalized magazine; by checking 'education', 'technology', and 'psychology" (I am fascinated by how the brain works) I am able to access the latest articles at my convenience.
TWITTER
This year I made a professional Twitter account. I use this mainly to read other professionals' tweets; I need to be more proactive with tweeting myself as I will sometimes read something interesting and forget to share it with others in my online learning community who might also benefit!
I find going into my colleagues' classrooms and watching them teach a lesson to be very beneficial. The conversations with other teachers in my school about what they are doing, how they deal with certain issues, etc. is also so helpful and appreciated!
This year (2014-2015) my PD focus is on Balanced Literacy, particularly Writer's Workshop. I am part of a district-wide group of other Grade One teachers with the same goal. We meet and collaborate with our mentor regularly. Click on my "Literacy Project 2015" page to see more!
Last year (2013-2014) my PD focus was on Guided Reading strategies. I used my PD Funds to attend the "Guided Reading 2 Part Series" in Edmonton with Wendy Legaarden and Judy Bourassa. This PD helped me with the practicalities of organizing effective Guided Reading routines (such as how to schedule, classroom management, student groupings/flexible rotation, various lesson formats, etc.) Kathy Pardell has also come into my classroom a few times to support this; her help with resources and lesson ideas has been especially helpful!
In February 2014 I attended the CCMA (Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators) "Strength in Unity" Conference in Calgary. I was able to talk to a few other Montessori teachers and was invited to visit one of the schools; I hope to take her up on this offer in the near future.
